Environment
Dialog firmly advocates the precautionary principle in all company investments and continue to look for ways in which our business can be improved to mitigate our own ecological footprint. Voluntary commitment towards applying the precautionary principle is reflected across our business units (such as conducting site audits and environmental assessments prior to the construction of transmission towers related to our mobile business) and keeping records and informing improvements to the organisations environmental performance.
Dialog complies with all legal and regulatory requirements associated with its activities. Our strategic investments to conserve the environment are updated by constantly monitoring the laws of the land, benchmarking against international health and environmental standards and by listening to our stakeholders. The relentless pressures exerted on the planet for its natural resources and consequent environmental degradation reaffirm the need for society to understand its actions in relation to the environment and act responsibly. As a dynamic corporate entity we are mindful of our ecological footprint and its repercussions to our fragile planet and take proactive measures to mitigate any adverse impacts through a planned environmental management process.
As a provider of multi sensory connectivity in Sri Lanka, we are aware that our services offer substantial benefits towards conserving our biophysical environment. Our mobile telephony services provide real benefits towards the general reduction of ozone depleting gasses, such as minimizing travel, which means there are lower vehicle emissions.
Dialog’s efforts in environmental friendly practice could be highlighted in 4 main aspects.
Material Management
Being a telecommunication service provider, we do not have any production activity. The environmental conscious approach to business has drawn the company to identify the consumption of paper for monthly bills as a key material for our operation and steps are taken to introduce initiatives such as ‘e’ bill and ‘summarised bills’ to the customers who were not in the need of lengthy bills. The company also launched an internal paper recycling project by which almost 77 tonnes were recycled.
Energy & Emissions
Dialog’s energy consumption is heavily dependent upon the National Grid supply of Sri Lanka. Majority of the energy requirement is for the numerous base stations around the country. The expansion of our network is partly challenged by the limitations of the coverage of the National grid. Dialog overcame the obstacles in the past through sites which were running totally on fuel generators. But as a recent ‘green’ initiative the company is in the process of implementing hybrid (wind + solar) powered sites. Currently we possess two such ‘green’ base stations and the company is planning on developing this initiative.
Biodiversity
Being a responsible and environmentally conscious telecommunications service provider, the company ensures the protection of Biodiversity through it’s operations. With the requirements of network expansion in telecommunication services, many preserved habitats are in threat of exploitation. A best practices guideline in Base station sites has already been stipulated within the company and used by the acquisition teams. Processes are also been implemented to suppress any kind of damage to the micro-habitats found within the 0.00063km2 area cleared for the base station sites.
Emissions
Being a service provider, our emissions would naturally be lower compared to multi scale production entities. Yet the Integral Corporate Responsibility team is continuously assessing the company’s carbon footprint and coordinating the means of minimizing the effect. The recent involvement in CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects have brought about initiatives such as energy management, alternate sources and base station sharing ploys.
