The secondary objectives include, providing a Centre of Excellence and an Innovation Hub to promote digital health solutions and the professional development of medical and engineering disciplines with regards to digital health, through the promotion and sharing of knowledge, technology know-how and experience; while removing barriers for collaboration between academia and the private sector, and streamlining policy and healthcare sector innovations in the process.

Some of the research areas and emerging technologies that will be explored by the laboratory will include Internet of Medical Things, Genomics and Bioinformatics, Point of Care Biomarker Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and Blockchain in the context of new product development for the healthcare sector of Sr Lanka. As such the Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka, the professional organization of the health and medical informaticians will bring in the medical expertise, while Dialog Axiata PLC, the leading technological enabler in the country, will power the proposed research laboratory with its advanced technological capabilities.

Commenting on the partnership, Indika Walpitage, Vice President of Network Operations and Service Assurance at Dialog Axiata PLC said, “We are pleased to partner with the Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka to establish ‘Digital Health Innovation Laboratory’, a proud first in Sri Lanka, to develop solutions to connect life sciences to the point-of-care and enable accessible and affordable health care across communities. The exceptionally powerful core competencies of both parties are poised to lead Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector into a health-tech revolution, through the digitisation of health care systems, which will eliminate variations in care and transform the patient experience through truly predictive, personalised, and preventive healthcare services.”

Making his comments on behalf of HISSL, Prof. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake said, “HISSL has been promoting frugal innovation in the digital health space for the past decade. The national health service has benefited from these innovations. We now see the need to speed up innovation to enable health services to be delivered in the community and at home rather than at health care institutions. The digital health innovation lab that we set up would enable us to do that”

8th August 2019. Colombo.

Dialog Axiata PLC announced its consolidated financial results for the six months ended 30th June 2019. Financial results included those of Dialog Axiata PLC (the “Company”) and of the Dialog Axiata Group (the “Group”).

The Group ended the 1st Half of 2019 on a strong note, continuing its growth momentum across Mobile, Fixed Line, Digital Pay Television and Tele-infrastructure businesses to record a consolidated revenue of Rs58.1Bn, demonstrating a growth of 10% Year-to-Date (“YTD”) while Group Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (“EBITDA”) grew 11% YTD to reach Rs23.1Bn. The adoption of SLFRS 16, ‘Leases’ with effect from 1 January 2019, translated to an EBITDA upliftment of Rs1.3Bn which is a 2.2pp increase in the EBITDA Margin which was recorded at 39.8% for 1H 2019.

The 2nd Quarter was marked by externalities as Easter Sunday incidents including social media blockage and business slowdown impacted both revenue and profitability. Aggressive competition and data re- pricing towards end Q1 2019 also aggravated the impact. Consequently, the Group revenue remained flat on a QoQ basis to record at Rs29.1Bn for Q2 2019. EBITDA declined 9% QoQ to record at Rs11.0Bn for Q2 2019 amid muted revenue growth and escalation in costs. On a YoY basis Revenue and EBITDA grew 9% and 5% respectively.

The Group Net Profit After Tax (“NPAT”) demonstrated a growth of 21% YTD to record at Rs6.9Bn for 1H 2019 underpinned by strong EBITDA performance. On a QoQ and YoY basis NPAT declined 59% and 30% respectively to reach Rs2.0Bn for Q2 2019.

Dialog Group continued to be a significant contributor to state revenues, remitting a total of Rs14.8Bn to the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) during the first six months of 2019. Total remittances included Direct Taxes and Levies amounting to Rs5.2Bn and Rs9.7Bn in Consumption Taxes collected on behalf of the GoSL.

Group capital expenditure for 1H 2019 was recorded at Rs8.7Bn representing a capex to revenue ratio of 15%. Capital expenditure was directed in the main towards investments in High-Speed Broadband infrastructure to further strengthen the Group’s position in Sri Lanka’s Broadband sector.

During the quarter BrandFinance recognised Dialog as Sri Lanka’s Most Valuable Brand for 2019 with a valuation of Rs54.2Bn whilst awarding the title ‘Top Telecommunications Brand’ for 10 years’. The growth in the brand reflects Dialog’s success in establishing itself as the main driver of Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and its sustained investments into introduction of new technology into the country.

Group Operating Free Cash Flow (“OFCF”) was recorded at Rs11.5Bn for 1H 2019 up from Rs5.8Bn recorded for 1H 2018. Dialog Group continued to exhibit a low geared balance sheet as the Net Debt to EBITDA ratio remained healthy at 0.91 times as at end of June 2019.

At an entity level, Dialog Axiata PLC (the “Company”) continued to contribute a major share of Group Revenue (72%) and Group EBITDA (76%). Company revenue declined 1% YTD to record at Rs41.6Bn for 1H 2019 mainly due to 25% YTD contraction in international wholesale revenue. Due to the externalities alluded to earlier the revenue remained flat QoQ whilst declining 2% YoY to record at Rs20.8Bn for Q2 2019. Company EBITDA was recorded at Rs17.6Bn for 1H 2019 representing an increase of 12% YTD. EBITDA was recorded at Rs8.3Bn for Q2 2019 declining 12% QoQ albeit increasing 3% YoY. The adoption of SLFRS 16 had a positive impact on the 1H performance of the Company resulting in an EBITDA upliftment of Rs1.2Bn for 1H 2019.

The Company NPAT demonstrated a growth of 32% YTD to be recorded at Rs6.8Bn for 1H 2019, driven by strong EBITDA growth.

Dialog Television (“DTV”), continued to consolidate its leadership position in the Digital Pay Television space with a subscriber growth of 27% YoY to reach 1.3Mn subscribers by end 1H 2019. Underpinned by growing subscriptions DTV Revenue increased by 17% YTD to be recorded at Rs4.3Bn for 1H 2019 while revenue was recorded at Rs2.2Bn for Q2 2019 up 5% QoQ and 23% YoY. On the back of strong revenue performance DTV EBITDA grew by 3% YTD to reach Rs1.1Bn for 1H 2019. However, DTV Net Loss marginally increased to Rs269Mn in 1H 2019 relative to a Net Loss of Rs256Mn for the corresponding period in 2018.

Dialog Broadband Networks (“DBN”) featuring the Group’s Fixed Telecommunications, Broadband and International Businesses recorded revenue of Rs13.4Bn for 1H 2019 up 87% YTD due to the transfer of wholesale business albeit revenue remaining flat on a QoQ basis to reach Rs6.7Bn. Downstream of revenue performance, DBN EBITDA recorded a growth of 11% YTD to reach Rs4.7Bn for 1H 2019. DBN NPAT however declined 26% YTD to be recorded at Rs0.8Bn for 1H 2019 due to increase in depreciation induced by aggressive investments into fixed 4G LTE.

  • Net Profit After Tax Rs7.5Bn
  • Recommended Dividend: 40% of Earnings, 37 Cents per Share
  • Direct and Indirect Contribution in Taxes, Fees and Levies to GoSL: Rs34.1Bn
  • Investment in High Speed Broadband and Other Infrastructure: Rs30.6Bn

Dialog Axiata PLC announced, Friday 15th February 2019, its consolidated financial results for the year ended 31st December 2018. Financial results included those of Dialog Axiata PLC (the “Company”) and of the Dialog Axiata Group (the “Group”) post-consolidation with subsidiaries, Dialog Broadband Networks (Pvt) Ltd (“DBN”), Dialog Television (Pvt) Ltd (“DTV”), Digital Holdings Lanka (Pvt) Ltd (“DHL”) and Dialog Finance PLC (“DFP”).

The Group concluded the Financial Year (“FY”) 2018 on a strong note, continuing growth momentum across all key business segments viz. Mobile, Fixed, Digital Pay Television, International and Tele-infrastructure businesses to record consolidated revenue of Rs109.2Bn, demonstrating a growth of 16% Year-to-Date (“YTD”). The Group revenue growth moderated to 2% Quarter-on-Quarter (“QoQ”) to be recorded at Rs28.5Bn for Q4 2018. On the backdrop of revenue growth and cost optimisation, Group Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (“EBITDA”) grew 29% YTD and 15% QoQ to reach Rs43.6Bn for FY 2018 and Rs12.5Bn for Q4 2018 respectively. The Group EBITDA margin for FY 2018 was accordingly recorded at 40%.

Notwithstanding the strong EBITDA performance, the Group was significantly impacted by the continued depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee (“LKR”) against the United States Dollar (“USD”) at 19.2% for FY 2018 resulting in a non-cash translational foreign exchange loss of Rs4.7Bn for the year. Consequently, the Group Net Profit After Tax (“NPAT”) declined 30% YTD to be recorded at Rs7.5Bn for FY 2018. The QoQ NPAT contracted 95% to reach a modest Rs0.1Bn due to forex losses and higher depreciation. Group NPAT post normalisation for the non-cash translational foreign exchange losses was recorded at Rs12.2Bn for FY 2018, representing an increase of 9% YTD.

The quarter also featured significant one-off gains and charges. The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ruled in favour of the Company’s fully owned subsidiary DBN on 14th December 2018, leading to a reversal of provision to the value of Rs3.7Bn during Q4 2018. The provision was made as a matter of prudence in FY 2012 for a possible claim of the said amount consequent to a judgement delivered by the Commercial High Court of Sri Lanka against Suntel Limited on 9th March 2012. Further in FY 2017 the Group embarked on an organisation transformation journey to accelerate simplification and digitisation of business activities, processes and competencies to fully leverage on capabilities of digital platforms and technologies. One-off costs related to this program is estimated to be Rs2.5Bn which has been provided for in the financial statements during Q4 2018.

Dialog Group continued to be a significant contributor to state revenues, remitting a total of Rs34.1Bn to the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) during the financial year ended 31st December 2018. Total remittances included Rs8.5Bn in Direct Taxes and Levies as well as Rs25.6Bn in Consumption Taxes collected on behalf of the GoSL.

In line with the financial performance of the Group and taking into account the forward investment requirements to serve the nation's demand for Telecommunication and Digital services, the Board of Directors of Dialog Axiata PLC at its meeting held on 15th February 2019, resolved to propose for consideration by the Shareholders of the Company, a cash dividend to ordinary shareholders amounting to thirty seven cents (Rs0.37) per share totalling to Rs3.0Bn. The said dividend, if approved by shareholders, would translate to a payout of 40% of consolidated Group NPAT for FY 2018. The dividend so proposed will be considered for approval by the shareholders at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Company, the date pertaining to which would be notified in due course.

The Group capital expenditure for the year ended 31st December 2018 totalled to Rs30.6Bn, up 12% YTD representing a Capex to Revenue ratio of 28%. Capital expenditure was directed in the main towards investments in High-Speed Broadband infrastructure to further strengthen the Group's leadership in Sri Lanka's Broadband sector. Notwithstanding the expansion of capital investments, the Group recorded Operating Free Cash Flow (“OFCF”) of Rs5.2Bn for FY 2018. Group Net Debt to EBITDA ratio remained healthy at 0.91 times as at end of December 2018.

The Q4 marked a major step forward in Sri Lanka’s 5G journey with the commissioning of South Asia’s first fully functional and standards compliant 5G transmission using commercial grade base stations and end user devices. Dialog’s pre-commercial 5G transmission was enabled in collaboration with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) who has led the region in making available spectrum in the 3.5GHz band for the piloting of pre-commercial 5G services. Dialog’s pilot 5G transmission delivers speeds in excess of 2 Gbps in a real-world setting including base stations installed and commercial grade 5G Home Gateway Routers, which can deliver 5G throughput to a host of wireless devices and applications across the spheres of video, gaming and automation.

At an entity level, Dialog Axiata PLC continued to contribute a major share of Group Revenue (77%) and Group EBITDA (70%). On the back of its mobile customer base of 13.8Mn subscribers, Company Revenue for FY 2018 grew by 9% YTD to reach Rs84.5Bn with revenue for Q4 2018 being recorded at Rs21.4Bn, up 1% QoQ. Underpinned by revenue performance and cost optimisation, Company EBITDA increased 13% YTD to reach Rs30.4Bn for FY 2018 translating to an EBITDA margin of 36.0%. The Company EBITDA declined 33% QoQ to record Rs5.8Bn for Q4 2018 mainly due to the aforementioned one-off provision on organisational transformation.

The depreciation of the LKR as alluded to earlier impacted the Company as the NPAT declined 58% YTD to reach Rs4.4Bn for FY 2018. The NPAT also declined on a QoQ basis and resulted in a Net Loss of Rs2.6Bn for Q4 2018. On normalising for the non-cash translational foreign exchange losses, Company NPAT was recorded at Rs8.9Bn for FY 2018, down 18% YTD.

The tragic events of Easter Sunday were some of the most challenging times we have faced as a nation. Despite the tragedy, the eagerness demonstrated by Sri Lankans overseas donors alike to help those most in need and give them the necessary strength to overcome adversities created a new sense of hope across communities. As an extension of these efforts to ensure that the children affected in Katuwapitiya and Kochchikade have a bright future ahead of them, and to inspire them to be courageous in pursuing their dreams, the long-term scholarship programme - ‘Shilpa Diriya’ by Archdiocese of Colombo in partnership with ‘Rally to Care’ initiative by Dialog Foundation, was launched on 1st December at Shangri La Hotel, Colombo. Children that were awarded scholarships together with their families attended the ‘Shilpa Diriya’ launch event, which was inaugurated by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo.

In addressing the scholarship recipients, His Eminence Malcom Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo stated, “God created you as a special person. You will never find another child in the world who has your exact personality, qualities, and talents. This means that you have been uniquely created and called for a special vocation by God. All that is left now is for you to discover your mission in life, through a strong faith in God. This can be achieved only by yourself, using your innate talents to become a blessing to yourself as well as to humanity in the future. Although tragedy has hindered your journey momentarily, every effort counts when you turn your situation in life into a blessing through the help you receive from friends and benefactors, transforming your future into a prosperous and blessed one. Make good use of this gift that has been given to you, by diligently applying yourself to your studies and striving to be a child who will grow into the right person to be a blessing to the society. My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who donated towards the Archbishop’s relief fund.”

Expressing his views on the power of education, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Ramanayake, Director, Seth Sarana - Caritas, Colombo said, “It is our dream to help children to become good citizens. You are indeed devastated. But remember that you have experienced God's preservation. Therefore, I hope that this will enable education to more meaningfully manifest in your life the new hope that is being generated within you. Education is a journey. A journey that enlightens you. A place you have many opportunities. Whenever there is an opportunity to do something, it is always through education that you are energized. Education is not just about knowing what is unknown. It’s a chance to learn to unlearn. Therefore, be mindful of the fact that this educational scholarship programme is a gift of love to you, take advantage of it and live as children who bring light to the land of your birth.” In his message to the children on behalf of Dialog Foundation, Supun Weerasinghe, Group Chief Executive of Dialog Axiata PLC said, “Children are the world’s hope for a better future, and at the heart of our goal of transforming their lives is education. Through this initiative we aspire to champion the children who have endured more than most and we remain committed to ensuring that they have a bright future ahead of them – one of hope and opportunity. This scholarship programme is integral in fulfilling our mission of enabling long-term education for the affected children through the Rally to Care initiative by Dialog Foundation - which was established with the generous support of Dialog customers, individual donors (overseas and local), business partners and enterprises; who all came together for this cause. It is our hope and our wish that through the facilitation of these scholarships, we are able to provide these children an opportunity to expand their knowledge, pursue their passions and grow to be exceptional Sri Lankans.”

With the ‘Shilpla Diriya’ long-term scholarship programme, 185 affected children in Katuwapitiya and 102 children affected in Kochchikade were awarded long-term scholarships, totalling 287 children. The scholarships provided through the ‘Shilpa Diriya’ programme will continue to be available to these students until they reach the age of 19 and the funds will be credited monthly to an account opened in the name of the students, on the 15th of every month.

Similar to ‘Shilpa Diriya’, a long-term scholarship programme for the 70 affected children in Zion Church Batticaloa will be launched on 12th December, in the presence of Roshan Mahesan, Pastor of the Zion Church, representatives of Rally to Care initiative, Sarvodaya and other partners.
